This August, Arthur Erickson Foundation (AEF) bid a sad farewell to several majestic native Pacific Dogwoods (Cornus nuttallii) in the Arthur Erickson Garden. These stately specimens formed an integral part of the garden’s dramatic forest backdrop, offering visitors the peaceful sensation of standing in a secluded forest clearing far removed from the city.
To steward the property, AEF commissioned a report by professional consulting arborist Michelle McEwen of Radix Tree Consulting to inventory and assess the site’s landscape resources. Following earlier safety pruning of the property’s Douglas fir trees by Grizzly Tree Experts in 2025, Radix identified three mature Dogwoods in advancing stages of decline due to irreversible fungal pathogens. After obtaining a permit from the City, the tree removal took place on August 17th and 18th (view slideshow).
An Artistic Opportunity!
To honor the memory of these trees, the AEF invites wood artists, wood turners, and wood carvers to select sections of the harvested Erickson dogwood for their artistic projects, free of charge. In exchange, participating artists commit to:
- Making a tax-deductible donation directly to the AEF based on the value of the completed artwork.
- Allowing the AEF to track and feature their work so the artist and their art can be acknowledged at a future AEF AGM and featured in online postings.
