Framing the Future: West Vancouver Memorial Libary and West Coast Modernism – 2025.07.02 to 2025.08.31
Category : Exhibition
Framing the Future is a photographic exhibition celebrating the early history of one of the West Vancouver’s most enduring institutions. Through archival photographs, this exhibit explores how the Library evolved from a postwar vision into a cultural and architectural landmark, reflecting the collective memories of generations who have used this space.
The Library officially opened on November 11, 1950, as a living tribute to those who gave their lives during the Second World War—conceived not only as a monument to the fallen but as a place for learning and community. Early images highlight the influence of West Coast Modern architecture, characterized by open plans, natural materials, and integration with the surrounding environment, creating a sense of warmth and openness.
From its modest beginnings as a 2,800-square-foot facility, the Library has continually adapted to the needs of a growing population. Four major expansions—in 1956, 1962, 1977, and 1993—reflect both evolving demands and a lasting commitment to thoughtful design. These photographs offer a window into how the Library has served as both a shared space and a shared story—honoring the past while looking to the future.
Presented in partnership with the West Vancouver Art Museum as part of West Coast Modern Week, July 8 to 13.
