If presented with the opportunity, how would you approach a renovation to a modern house of architectural significance? Would you try to restore it to its original glory? Would you gut it down to the studs and overhaul it with the latest materials and technologies that our generation has to offer? Are you unsure what the right answer is? Hint: there is no one answer.

Join the League on July 5th at The Polygon Gallery for a conversation critically exploring the architectural RESTOMOD, with renowned local designers Sophie Burke (Sophie Burke Design), Fook Weng Chan (FWC Architecture & Urban Design), and Mark Ritchie (Architecture Building Culture), each of whom has taken on sensitive and innovative renovations to significant modern houses.

REGISTER TODAY!

On July 5th, join the West Coast Modern League for a conversation critically exploring the architectural RESTOMOD. Joined by renowned local designers Sophie Burke, Fook Weng Chan, and Mark Ritchie, and moderated by Chelsea Grant, each of whom has taken on sensitive and innovative renovations to significant modern houses, this discussion will probe the varied and divergent approaches used in the act of restoring our modern architectural history while modifying to contemporary technologies and standards of living.

Renovation is a part of the natural life cycle of any building, and as times change, so too do materials, building technologies, and lifestyles. But how do you approach a renovation when the building is an important part of our modern architectural history? What, if anything, is precious to the original “classic?” What modifications should we make to usher this architecture into the 21st century? How, among other things, do we uphold our regional expression of modernism while improving for healthier, more environmentally conscious spaces?

The concept of the Grotto House emerged out of the

The concept of the Grotto House emerged out of the impulses to accentuate and merge with a bedrock outcropping surrounding the existing house, and to celebrate the material and auditory experiences of this formative geologic feature. Taking cues from rainwater trickling over moss covered surfaces, the permanence of the rock, and the warmth of its enveloping form, the studio addition was designed to extend out from the original house, and to inhabit the space between it and the cherished rock, while taking on these natural features. Constructed of organic forms, natural materials, adorned in mosses, grasses, and sedums, and designed to engage with our region’s dominant weather, rain, the Grotto House becomes of its place.

Grotto is a word used to describe a small cave, or

Grotto is a word used to describe a small cave, or an artificial recess or structure made to resemble a natural cave. The term originates from the early 17th century, from the Italian word grotta, via Latin from Greek kruptē ‘a vault’, from kruptos ‘hidden’.

For a project in Victoria, a small studio addition and work-at-home space for a family with a love for a bedrock outcropping in their backyard, the concept of the grotto emerged. Designed by Greenway Studio Architecture, and completed in 2022, this is Grotto House.

‘Hassell House’ is credited as a prototype for future works by architects Robert Hassell and Barry Griblin.

“Their cedar-clad timber frame designs explored a particular verticality, stepping up terrain that was often considered unbuildable, that created uniquely dynamic living spaces and relationships to their landscapes,” Gairns said, adding that the architect pair’s designs are some of the region’s most definitively west coast houses, including Hassell House.
