Vancouver came out en masse! It was another except

Vancouver came out en masse! It was another exceptional year of design films and community at the ADFF:Vancouver. We saw films that explored the relationship between our built and natural worlds, from mothership Earth to the new frontier, the importance of safe and intimate neighbourhoods, along with radical and poetic experiments in architecture and industrial design. Beyond that, it was, as it always is, a wonderful opportunity to reunite with good friends old and new.

We are so grateful to Leah Mallen and Anne Pearson, ADFF:Vancouver Co-Producers, and Kyle Bergman, ADFF Director + Founder for their dedication to this cultural event, and to the incredible support of our Vancouver community who come out each year in a shared love of design and storytelling.

You may remember, in the before times of February

You may remember, in the before times of February 2020, the League hosted the Iconic Houses Lecture Tour with Pavel Kuznetsov, then the Deputy Director of the Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow (2010–2022) and Founding Director of the State Melnikovs Museum (2014–2022). Now, Pavel, along with Marianne Burkhalter and Christian Sumi, have published a book on the famed soviet architect.

"The architecture of the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s was integral to shaping twentieth century modernism. Russian architect Konstantin Melnikov (1890–1974) was a key figure of this movement, with many of his realized projects becoming icons of modernism. Because he refused to conform to architectural standards after Stalin’s cultural turn in 1932, his works were largely forgotten for several decades. He was rehabilitated and received public recognition for his imaginative constructions only a few years prior to his death in 1974.

This publication presents models of Konstantin Melnikov’s built and unbuilt works, created under the direction of Pavel Kuznetsov by the students of the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. The models are accompanied by photographs, sketches and project descriptions expanding on Melnikov’s work. An essay by Pavel Kuznetsov situates the architect in his historical context, shedding light on an under-appreciated figure of architectural history."

Last month, a new purpose-built art museum opened

Last month, a new purpose-built art museum opened its doors on the Burnaby Mountain campus of Simon Fraser University. Named after Marianne and her late husband Dr. Edward Gibson, a university faculty member and Director of the SFU Gallery (1986-1997), the Gibson Art Museum was designed by Toronto-based architect Siamak Hariri (Hariri Pontarini Architects), with Iredale Architecture, and sited along the main student thoroughfare leading into the renowned Academic Quadrangle. Rooted in the couple’s belief in arts ability to ignite curiosity and build more inclusive communities, the design embraces its natural, treed setting and cultural landscape, enabling art to be experienced both inside-and-out and serving as a bridge between the surrounding community and the Arthur Erickson & Geoffrey Massey master planned university.

Next month, one of our design community’s signature annual festivals returns! The Architecture + Design Film Festival runs November 5–9 with in-person screenings, talks, and receptions celebrating all things architecture and design. It all kicks off at the Hollywood Theatre on November 5th with an opening gala and the Canadian premiere of “Identity: A Czech Graphic Design Love Story.” Moving to the VIFF Centre in Downtown Vancouver, the following 4 days will see a curated selection of films and discussions celebrating the unique spirit that drives the creative disciplines, while entertaining, engaging, and educating all types who are excited about architecture and design.
