Named after Marianne and her late husband Dr. Edward Gibson, a university faculty member and Director of the SFU Gallery (1986-1997), the Gibson Art Museum was designed by Toronto-based architect Siamak Hariri (Hariri Pontarini Architects), with Iredale Architecture, and sited along the main student thoroughfare leading into the renowned Academic Quadrangle. Rooted in the couple’s belief in arts ability to ignite curiosity and build more inclusive communities, the design embraces its natural, treed setting and cultural landscape, enabling art to be experienced both inside-and-out and serving as a bridge between the surrounding community and the Arthur Erickson & Geoffrey Massey master planned university.
