🚨 Completed in 1962, the Charles G. Brown Memorial Pool was designed by Blair Macdonald, then of McCarter Nairne and Partners, in Burnaby. In late 2022, after 60 years in service, the building was closed, and earlier this year it was demolished to make way for a new aquatic centre and arena.

Last night saw the Vancouver launch of a new publication featuring contemporary adaptations of West Coast Modernism reflected through the modern residential projects of BC-based architects.

"Decades after gaining international recognition through the work of practitioners such as Barry Downs, Arthur Erickson, and Ron Thom, the West Coast Modern style remains widely celebrated and highly influential for residential architects in British Columbia and beyond, even as its expressions evolve and adapt to contemporary contexts. What are the contours of its legacy today—and has a new regional style emerged?

Clinton Cuddington invited dozens of B.C.-based architects to share residential projects that exemplify their design process. Their responses range from palatial mountain chalets to cabins sitting lightly in the forest to oceanfront retreats to sensitive urban renovations. Each house is presented through full-colour photos and accompanied by short essays by curator and critic Michael Prokopow that draw on visits to each house and interviews with the architects to elucidate the many aesthetic and programmatic accomplishments on display.

As Prokopow details in an incisive essay, each house is necessarily also a response to the conditions of its creation, notably its site—locations include the Sea-to-Sky Region, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, Southern Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the West Kootenays—as well as its social and cultural context, and so is revealing of modern ideas about home and family, leisure and vocation, ecological concerns and communion with nature on Canada’s West Coast.

With thoughtful, deeply informed prose and over 300 captivating photos, Reside is an absorbing and inspiring tour of some of the most exceptional houses in the country, and a portrait of how the unique character of the region is expressed in built form." – Figure 1 Publishing

11 days of exhibitions, lectures, networking, walking tours, and open studios kicks off today across Vancouver. Join us during the first annual Design Vancouver Festival, a citywide festival hosted by Vancouver’s thriving design community. You may remember this event from years ago when it was known as Vancouver Design Week. Design Vancouver Festival brings together designers of all disciplines, design enthusiasts, and friends and patrons of the design community.

The League is thrilled to bring its popular ON THE BOARDS series to this year's festival. On Monday, the League with Inform Interiors will be joined by Andrea McLean and Imu Chan for a talk bridging the disciplines of architecture, interior design, and art in the public realm, each presenting works recently completed or currently underway.

In the late 1960s, architect Roger Kemble ventured

In the late 1960s, architect Roger Kemble ventured away from the regional modernist influences of his early career, designing a series of “coloured box” houses in Vancouver and on the North Shore, projects that would garner attention both locally and with national audiences. Exploring the use of plywood as both a sheathing membrane and structural stressed skin, coated in a neoprene hypalon sealer, and finished in a vibrant palette of blues, reds, and yellows, among others, these homes were radically different from the predominant ideas of modern west coast design.

Meet Imu Chan, local Architect AIBC, and one of the next speakers at the League's On the Boards series on September 23rd.

Imu is a Vancouver-based architect practicing at the confluence of art and architecture. His portfolio spans personal sanctuaries, gathering places and public art. His works are marked by their simplicity, purposefulness and emotional affinity with us, often achieved by humble means and with affecting imagination.

Rejecting conventional approach to design, Imu draws inspiration from diverse sources beyond the realm of architecture, particularly films and literature. Recently completed projects include a private residence paying homage to Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, a laneway home designed from a feline perspective, and Cups – part of a group exhibit at Museum of Vancouver – that celebrates humanitarian design using mahogany harvested in Guatemala and Nicaragua.

Meet Andrea McLean, local Intern Architect AIBC and Interior Designer IDIBC, and one of the next speakers at the League's On the Boards series on September 23rd.

Andrea's design practice focuses on residential building design, interior design, and landscape design. She credits her time living in Japan, five years total, following interior design school, as pivotal in shaping her sense of place and understanding its relationship to design and architecture. During this time, Andrea became intimately familiar with Japanese life, art, culture, and language, which started her curiosity in looking deeper into how people live, and why. Since graduating from Architecture school in 2008, Andrea has been simultaneously engaged in her busy design practice and raising her two daughters, Pilar and Hana. Andrea’s projects have been frequently published and have won numerous awards including an Architizer Jury Award in 2018, and the Robert Ledingham Award at the IDIBC Shine Awards in 2022.

September 19–29, Design Vancouver Festival makes its debut into Vancouver's thriving design scene. Formerly known as Vancouver Design Week, Design Vancouver includes 66 events spanning 11 days, including open studios, architecture tours, curated talks, and industry gatherings. The festival provides a platform for Vancouverites to explore, discuss, and engage with design under the theme of Connection. Immerse yourself in walk-throughs of iconic buildings, sit in on discussions about creativity, participate in hands-on workshops and take a candid look around working studios. Gain insights into design processes, from chairs to skyscrapers, and hear from professionals on topics like “home,” alternative housing models, and sustainable practices.

📢 The League opens its 2024/25 season at the Design Vancouver Festival!

On September 23rd, the West Coast Modern League, with Inform Interiors, presents the next instalment of the League’s popular On the Boards speaker series. Bridging the disciplines of architecture, interior design, and art in the public realm, we will be joined by Andrea McLean and Imu Chan, each presenting projects recently completed or currently underway. On the Boards is an ongoing speaker series that aims to immerse us in the creative works of our local design talent, with those who are carrying forward the fertile culture of creativity and experimentation on Canada’s west coast.

Andrea McLean is an Intern Architect AIBC and Registered Interior Designer IDIBC. She is the founder and Principal of Andrea McLean Studio, a design practice focused on residential building design, interior design, and landscape design.

Imu Chan is an Architect AIBC. He is the Principal of Imu Chan Architecture, a design practice that traverses fluidly between art and architecture with projects ranging from personal sanctuaries and gathering places to public art consultation.

For Arthur Erickson, the home that he designed for

For Arthur Erickson, the home that he designed for Helmut and Hildegard Eppich was born from the landscape. "The landscape concept emerged even before the house. Part of the stream was diverted to form a small lake providing an intimate focus and to bring reflected light into the middle of the dark lot. Then a design was developed that placed the house on the worst part of the property as a retaining structure, and left the best to be enjoyed."[1] Crafted in his signature material, concrete, Eppich House I is often revered as one of Erickson's best residential designs.

Eppich House I is currently on the market in search of new residents who will appreciate and shepherd this remarkable architecture forward as the work of art that it is.

The League's Modern Places collection isn't just a

The League's Modern Places collection isn't just about modern houses on the west coast, but also includes civic, office, multi-family, institutional buildings, and places of art in the public realm.

Wind Flowers is a place of art along a main thoroughfare, described as an "anti-monumental gateway between Vancouver and Richmond." The installation is made up of 26 hand-painted fiberglass fragments atop 13 flexible steel armatures, each of which slightly bends in response to the wind. "Themes of specialization, apprenticeship, intuition and regional specificities of craft are crucial to the exploration of [this work] and manifest in the process of making. The fabrication process is informed by prevalent local industries that supported the boat building, fishing and industrial production that previously defined the geographical landscape of the region." – Atelier Anonymous
