In 2024, the League brought its popular 'On the Boards' series to the relaunched Design Vancouver Festival. Hosted by Inform Interiors, we were joined by Andrea McLean and Imu Chan for a talk bridging the disciplines of architecture, interior design, and art in the public realm.

Andrea McLean holds two distinctions, Intern Architect, AIBC, and Registered Interior Designer, IDIBC. Her design practice focuses on residential building design, interior design, and landscape design. Andrea credits her time living in Japan, five years total, following interior design school, as pivotal in shaping her sense of place and understanding it’s relationship to design and architecture.

Imu Chan is a Vancouver-based architect practicing at the confluence of art and architecture. His portfolio spans personal sanctuaries, gathering places and public art. His works are marked by their simplicity, purposefulness and emotional affinity with us, often achieved by humble means and with affecting imagination.

2024 marked the centenary of Canada’s pre-eminen

2024 marked the centenary of Canada’s pre-eminent architect Arthur Erickson. The West Coast Modern League, with the West Vancouver Art Museum and the The Polygon Gallery, celebrated the centenary and the built legacy of Arthur Erickson through the lens of local designers who have revisited the famed architect’s work. We were joined by Daina Augaitis, Clinton Cuddington, Geoffrey Erickson, and Nick Milkovich who shared their work on Smith House II, Filberg House, and the Museum of Anthropology, respectively. Through active renewal and preservation, this group has helped to shepherd these iconic structures forward, working to safeguard their physical longevity and continued inspiration for future generations.

Vancouver-born and raised, Erickson developed an interest first in the arts and then in the study of architecture, leading to an eclectic career with international impact that spanned six decades and produced some of Canada’s most iconic structures. Erickson defined site, light, cadence, and space as his four first principles of architecture, elements that are each critical to the understanding of his design explorations. From these, he created some of our region’s most cherished modern buildings, from single-family residences to our most significant cultural and civic spaces.

In 2024, the League took its popular 'On the Boards' speaker series to the Design Victoria Festival, joined by Bianca Bodley of Biophilia Design Collective and landscape architect Andrew van Egmond, for a talk on bespoke, natural landscapes.

Working at a variety of project scales, Victoria-based Biophilia Design Collective, founded by Bianca Bodley, aims to design meaningful, resilient, and connected landscapes that enrich the lives of all users, cultivate moments of connection, create and nourish a sense of community, and support the ecological and cultural fabric within which they exist.

Andrew is well known for his subtle and minimalistic landscape design approach. With his experience, he works to strengthen the sense of place by connecting it with the underlying landscape. Andrew’s landscape architecture explores the contrast between the natural landscape and architecture, striving for a balance between the spontaneous expression of nature and minimal-modern architectural interventions.

In 2024, the West Coast Modern League, with Inform

In 2024, the West Coast Modern League, with Inform Interiors, welcomed Marc Treib to Vancouver for a fabulous talk on the landscapes and architecture of 20th century California's Thomas Church and William Wurster. 'Tommy and Bill' examined the course of their buildings and landscapes as they evolved over several decades, deriving their designs in response to their physical and social environments.

Beginning in the 1930s, but especially during the immediate postwar years, William Wilson Wurster and Thomas Dolliver Church—in architecture and landscape architecture respectively—included in their sizable dossiers works executed both in collaboration and individually. While Wurster shunned the wholescale adoption of modernist ideas from abroad, he used them to temper and adapt long-established California architectural traditions. Sharing with Wurster these same predilections, Church produced an impressive number of landscapes both in Northern California and in the United States more widely, but always rooted to their sites, environments, and clients’ lives, whether ultimately deriving modernist form and space or those more traditional.

Marc Treib is Professor of Architecture Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and a prolific author whose writing focuses on modern landscape and architecture in the United States, Scandinavia, and Japan.

#FridayFinds This week we give you a 2-for-1 special. Here we find a couple of early works of local modernism, on the rocky slopes of West Vancouver, both featured in the Fall/Winter 1973-74 issue of House Beautiful's Building Manual. This issue focused on houses in symbiosis with nature, demonstrating that the "development of land need not destroy its character. It is possible to adapt a house to its surroundings–with assimilation of architecture and environment–so that each enhances the other." I think they came to the right place–we do this so well!

Ron Rule was a celebrated landscape architect whos

Ron Rule was a celebrated landscape architect whose work and dedication profoundly influenced landscape architecture on the West Coast of Canada. Born in the United States, he earned a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon, later registering as a landscape architect in British Columbia (1975), Washington (1978), and California (2002). Early in his career, he gained formative experience working with renowned landscape architect Don Vaughan before founding his own firm in 1975, specializing in high-end residential garden design. In a career spanning over 50 years, Ron completed nearly 2,000 projects, earning a reputation as a pioneer of residential landscapes.

Ron’s expertise extended beyond design into education, mentorship, and public engagement. For 17 years, he directed the UBC Continuing Studies Garden Design Certificate Program, and co-established the UBC Garden Design Lecture Series. His lectures, tours, and writings bridged professional practice and public appreciation for garden design, helping to elevate the field. Internationally, he immersed himself in the horticultural traditions of England and France, working in the iconic gardens of Christopher Lloyd at Great Dexter and Rosemary Verey at Barnsley House, and organizing, along with his wife Carolann, 16 garden design history tours to the region.

A prolific writer and speaker, Ron’s work regularly appeared in numerous publications, including Landscape Architecture Magazine, Azure, Garden Design, Canadian Living, BC Home and Garden, and Western Living. A mentor, educator, and community leader, Ron was considered an ambassador for the profession of Landscape Architecture, inspiring countless students, practitioners, and the general public, leaving an enduring legacy.

Ron Rule passed away on November 26, 2024 in Vancouver. The West Coast Modern League offers our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all of those who have taken inspiration from his designs, depth of knowledge, and mentorship.

#FridayFinds Here we find a feature on a small home, less than 1,000 square feet, for a young couple on a treed lot overlooking the harbour, a view since overgrown by the surrounding vegetation. The home was built in 1949, a design of architect Fred Hollingsworth, marked by "crisp, clean, modern lines and functional, open planning..." We're happy to report that this home still stands today.

The West Coast Modern League congratulates Pantea

The West Coast Modern League congratulates Pantea Haghighi on her appointment as the Administrator/Curator for the West Vancouver Art Museum.

Haghighi has been serving as Curator in Residence at the Vancouver Art Gallery and is currently a Doctoral student at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on modernism in architecture and visual arts in relation to vernacular politics. Her dedication to the arts is evident in her community advocacy, fundraising, and experience with intellectually ambitious curatorial projects.

Haghighi takes over the position from Dr. Hilary Letwin, whose exemplary work over the past six years continued to elevate the Museum’s high reputation. We wish Letwin all the best in her new position as Manager of Curatorial Services for the City of Coquitlam.

The West Vancouver Art Museum has a rich history of promoting and advancing knowledge of the architecture and design of the West Coast. Here at the West Coast Modern League, we are proud to have served as collaborators and contributors to the Museum across numerous past projects, and we look forward to continuing this support and collaborative spirit.

Looking back at photos from an early formative tri

Looking back at photos from an early formative trip to Los Angeles, in first year architecture school, with a visit to the incomparable Schindler House. 14 years later came the distinct pleasure to introduce, to a sold-out audience, the ADFF Vancouver premiere of Schindler Space Architect, the first feature-length documentary on its famed architect.

In telling the story of West Coast Modernism, we often talk about the formative influences of Frank Lloyd Wright, and Richard Neutra who famously lectured in Vancouver in 1946 and 1953. But, while we are less often to mention him, we can and do include Rudolph Schindler within that sphere of influence. Schindler’s life and career was intimately intertwined with those whom we consider the global pioneers of modern architecture, and whose ethos and renegade spirit we can draw many similarities to our own home-grown movement.

Schindler was a rebellious, counter-cultural figure and, like so many of his early 20th century counterparts, emigrated to America with the dream of breaking from European traditions. Rudolph would push that boundary even further. He spent the bulk of his career in L.A. preoccupied with creating a more radical architecture from the inside-out, connected to its place in the world, and intently focused on the human experience. He turned modern dwelling on its head, with new forms and materials used in a way that was subservient to the human experience and embraced nature and architecture as indistinguishable.

Watching the film and reminiscing on this early visit, thinking about his history and work in the context of our own regional response to modernism, perhaps we owe more credit to Schindler’s local influence than we’ve so far given him.

Last night was a wonderful conversation with Anne Pearson, Clinton Cuddington, and Ema Peter talking design, photography, writing, and our generation of west coast contemporary architects carrying forward the strength and traditions of our regional design culture.

While we are a quiet bunch, in the typical Canadian way, for the better part of a century we have had an incredible community of designers and artists unafraid to make bold moves with forward-thinking curiosity. Historically lauded, this culture has served us well and the eyes of the world have and continue to watch us with interest. We have something special going on here, we have for some time, and it's important that we not only reflect on our achievements, but take these lessons with us into the future and not be shy about celebrating them.

Villa Maris, lovingly known as the Pink Palace, is

Villa Maris, lovingly known as the Pink Palace, is a modern icon of New Sensualism on the shores of West Vancouver. Built in 1965, the 101-unit apartment building, with its minimalism, bold use of colour, arches and curvature, takes inspiration from Miami Modernism and sets itself apart from the predominant expressions of modern architecture on the North Shore. Inside and out, the building is a trip back in time and a character unto itself, equally animated by a vibrant balcony culture born of its community of residents.

Daniel Evan White is perhaps one of our region's g

Daniel Evan White is perhaps one of our region's greatest residential architects and one of our biggest secrets. Daniel was not one for self-promotion, and so his work, which is nothing less than stunning and intuitive, has largely stayed out of the limelight. Like so many others of significance, his work is largely unprotected, despite being deserving of it.

Daniel was a graduate of UBC architecture, and credited as the first full-time employee of Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey, contributing to their 1962 winning competition for Simon Fraser University. He spent much of his career designing single-family houses, with a body of work characterized by a strict adherence to geometric play, which he used as a way to divide up the functional spaces of a home and to engage the structure and form with the surrounding topography. He had an ability to create experimental homes that were monumental and yet some of the most intuitively livable spaces we've had the pleasure of visiting.

Not 1, but 2 of Daniel Evan White's homes are currently on the market, including his 1980 Máté House in West Vancouver, and 1994 Bjorknas House in North Vancouver. While the Bjorknas House appears to have adhered to its original design, the Máté House has undergone some transformation (the photos shown are of its original character). Both houses are significant to the modern architectural history of our region and so we are hopeful that new owners will see these homes as the works of art that they are.
