‘Hassell House’ is credited as a prototype for future works by architects Robert Hassell and Barry Griblin.

“Their cedar-clad timber frame designs explored a particular verticality, stepping up terrain that was often considered unbuildable, that created uniquely dynamic living spaces and relationships to their landscapes,” Gairns said, adding that the architect pair’s designs are some of the region’s most definitively west coast houses, including Hassell House.

We’ll soon announce the local designers who will join us for our West Coast Modern Week event to talk about architectural restomods (restoration/modification) in our region.

What, if anything, is precious to the original “classic” architecture? What modifications should we make to usher this architecture into the 21st century? How, among other things, do we uphold our regional expression of modernism while improving for healthier, more environmentally conscious spaces? Of much debate among design and heritage critics, this discussion will probe the varied and divergent approaches used in the act of restoring our modern architectural history while modifying to contemporary technologies and standards of living.

What part of our region comes to mind when you think of a modern west coast home? Bet it’s the North Shore! While North and West Vancouver boast many of these celebrated houses, there is in fact modernist enclaves peppered all over the south coast of British Columbia, and across the province for that matter. Case in point, the Taylor House was designed by G. Douglas Wylie, completed in 1962, on a hillside overlooking New Westminster. The post-and-beam home, carrying influences of Japanese architecture, was designed for the Taylor family.

🚨THIS IS NOT A TEAR DOWN: This is Hassell House, designed and built by Robert Hassell in 1966 as a home for himself. Hassell, widely recognized throughout the southern coastal regions of British Columbia for his domestic, mineshaft modern cedar buildings, is said to have used the design of this house as a prototype for the extensive body of work that would follow in the 1960s and 1970s. This is an architecture to uphold and to continue to learn from, not relegate to the landfill.

Robert Hassell, along with is design partner Barry Griblin (Hassell/Griblin), “graduated from the UBC School of Architecture in the mid-1960s, and extended the idealism engendered there to a design/build practice that fostered an intimate dialogue with the landscape and future occupants. The designer/builders merged a high modernist preoccupation with space, “of working in the 3rd and 4th dimension,” with an economy-minded construction savvy that produced simple, inexpensive shells of systematized proportions and typified details.”[1]
