Müdry Salon – 2026.03.15
March 15, 2026 from 2:00pm–5:00pm
Private Salon
Presented by the West Coast Modern League
with Penny Mitchell, Meme Brooks, and the Müdry family
An afternoon of art, architecture, and conversation at the late architect Arthur Müdry’s remarkable personal residence.
The Müdry House wholly encapsulates Arthur’s love for architecture, the natural world, and his rare capacity to dissolve the spatial and material thresholds between the great outdoors and the constructed environment. After relocating to Vancouver and marrying his life-long partner Hazel, the couple purchased this 1937 home in West Vancouver and embarked on a transformative renovation. Characteristic of Arthur’s unique oeuvre, the home exudes an etherial and sophisticated whimsy where nature and home fuse into a cohesive whole.
Arthur was amongst a cohort of early West Coast Modernists whose creative voice contributed uniquely to the experimental culture of our regional mid-century modern ethos. Typified by a deep respect for the natural world, which he considered sacrosanct, his work was set apart by an early interest in aeronautical engineering that undoubtedly influenced his aptitude for geometric and structural exploration. Arthur is best known for his designs of the 1965 Beaton House and 1989 Chun House in West Vancouver, both featured in the annual West Coast Modern Home Tour. Equally impressive is the 1964 St. Stephen’s United Church in Vancouver, and the hyperbolic paraboloid forms of the 1967 West Vancouver Baptist Church.
The League, with Penny Mitchell, Meme Brooks, and the Müdry family, were joined by members of the design community for an opportunity to experience this exceptional work of Arthur Müdry’s prior to the family passing the baton to the next stewards. The event featured live music from Tom Arntzen, with remarks from Arthur’s son Brent Müdry, and one of Canada’s foremost heritage consultants Donald Luxton.
