855/899 Homer is located at the corner of the Yale

855/899 Homer is located at the corner of the Yaletown and Library District neighbourhoods of downtown Vancouver. Completed in 1992, the building comprises a five storey podium of offices, health club, retail, and dining at the base of a 20 storey residential tower. The complex spans the length of a city block, with the tower sited at mid-block and the commercial podium wrapping around it to the west side. On the east side, the podium opens up to a public plaza, where the tower meets the ground, providing a mediated entrance for its residents that is softened from the bustling street.

This is what’s left of the Plaza of Nations and

This is what’s left of the Plaza of Nations and BC Pavilion (Vancouver’s modern interpretation of the Crystal Palace). Originally constructed for Expo ‘86, for decades it was a part of the city’s fabric of cultural venues, large in scale and uniquely positioned on the waterfront. Had it been more valued and maintained as a public asset, just think of the continued role it could play for our cultural infrastructure. Think of the festival city of Montreal. The BC Pavilion is still standing at a time when we desperately need more public spaces to collectively celebrate. Just imagine the possibilities.

Canada House was originally purposed as the home o

Canada House was originally purposed as the home of Team Canada during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Designed by Nick Milkovich with Arthur Erickson, the low-lying towers prominently feature on the coastal shoreline as a pair of duelling fish scaled forms set against the rippling foregrounded waters of False Creek. The complex is composed of two buildings flanking the east and west edges of a sunny, central courtyard. The fish scale silhouette is generated by the gentle rotation of each floor upon one another in conjunction with glass and stainless-steel cladding. Since 2010, the complex has served as a residential building.

The Berkeley Tower is recognized as one of the fir

The Berkeley Tower is recognized as one of the first post-war residential towers to be built in the beach community of Vancouver's west end. Designed by Warnett Kennedy, the design took on a simple slab form, rotated 45 degrees to the street to allow ocean views for each of its residents, punctuated by large corner windows and an exterior painted in green and yellow.

Now known as Muro, the building recently underwent extensive renovations and upgrades, designed by @officemb. Elevating its place as a landmark in the city, the exterior now features a painted mural on all four sides of the tower by renowned Canadian artist @douglascoupland. Utilizing a pattern of colours and geometries synonymous with his work, the murals help to demarcate Muro as an anchor point that aptly represents the bustling neighbourhood and the threshold where the city meets the sea.

This past year, the League joined with our global

This past year, the League joined with our global community in celebration of the centenary and built legacy of Canada’s pre-eminent architect Arthur Erickson. Far and wide, the community came out in droves to mark this important milestone, and to share in Arthur’s timeless sense of design and deep cultural impact. From talks to exhibitions, films to house tours, it was a busy year. Thank you to everyone who organized these wonderful events and to all who came out in support.

Born in Vancouver on June 14, 1924, Arthur Charles Erickson became perhaps the most important modern architect in Canadian history. Not only did he create some of Canada’s most iconic buildings, but he was, in large part, responsible for galvanizing and elevating to international acclaim the modern architectural identity of our country’s westernmost metropolitan region. A visionary artist, architect, and urban planner, the larger-than-life Vancouver native lead an extraordinary and illustrious career underpinned by the profound influence of international travel and the pursuit of an architecture, well ahead of its time, rooted in its physical and cultural context. A teacher and mentor to countless budding designers, Arthur was an architect with global impact who was celebrated for his progressive and technically innovative ideas, and who was unafraid to call on others to invest in better design for the betterment of our social and environmental fabric.
