Robert Hassell and Barry Griblin in studio at the Hassell House. They started working together in 1968, with a shared interest in BC's wood industrial buildings, and would go on to design some of our region's most definitively "west coast" houses, of the kind you think of when dreaming of a home in the woods amongst towering cedars. "If there really is such as thing as a west coast housing vernacular, it is surely epitomized by their work. Hassell/Griblin houses are often, and perhaps aptly, described as early mineshaft; modern cedar structures clinging to an unbuildable site."[1] ⁠

🚨 DEMOLITION ALERT: The studio, along with the house, is not long for this world. Currently threatened with demolition, redevelopment is looming, and it's a loss we do not need. As we've seen time and again, real estate pressures are too great, and our municipal policies and incentives are not enough. While it is on the market, it would take someone with deep pockets, and a strong stomach for restoration, to bring it back from the edge. ⁠

🚨 UPDATE: The proposed variance, seeking to build an underground garage in place of the original carport, was approved yesterday by the Board of Variance. While this meeting had no bearing on the ultimate fate of the original home, we, yet again, witness as a modern house with an important history is allowed to proceed unchecked through the motions of redevelopment. While it is an unreasonable expectation to save everything, we need to do better at looking towards our modern history with more reverence. It has, after all, shaped the built environment of our region in tremendous ways for the better part of a century. ⁠

🚨 DEMOLITION ALERT: Immense sloped skylights, at the scale of a roof plane, is a signature of Robert Hassell's architectural idiom. Not only does it allow for natural light to permeate through the home's vertical, interconnected spaces, but it exposes the interior to views of the treetops and the moody skies of the pacific northwest. A visual, audible (during our rainy days), and thermal perceptive experience further blurring one's sense of enclosure under the towering fir trees of West Vancouver. ⁠
