We are the WEST COAST MODERN LEAGUE, an independent, volunteer-based, nonprofit society dedicated to celebrating, and advancing the understanding and appreciation of, modern architecture and design of the North American west coast, with a special focus on the BC south coast.

The building's namesake, Frederic Lasserre, was born in Switzerland but relocated to Canada where he eventually trained to become an architect. As the first director of the newly formed School of Architecture at the University of British Columbia, Frederic "defined the school’s identity as expressly modernist. Lasserre sought to draw young modernists to the school to create a lively environment to foster creative architectural responses to Vancouver’s evolving needs."[1] ⁠

This is the Frederic Lasserre Building, home to the UBC School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture. Designed by Thompson, Berwick + Pratt, construction was completed in 1962. The building is the namesake of architect Frederic Lasserre who was the first director of the newly formed UBC School of Architecture in 1950, reorganized from the previous Department of Architecture under the Faculty of Applied Science. ⁠

A project beholden to the true nature of its mater

A project beholden to the true nature of its materials, the Spilt Level House takes on all of the qualities you would expect of a west coast home. The architect notes, “the house’s existing simple builder details were preserved or repaired to create a strong contrast between the old house and the new interior. This project dignifies a disparaged era of Western Canadian architecture-without-architects that was actually quite robust, quietly futuristic and reflective of the families that lived inside.” “This renovation project was only finished with real materials that will patina. A palette of heated concrete floors, raw waxed steel, bleached oak plywood and sculpted white drywall enclose a variety of spaces that are simple and complex.”[1]

⁠Welcome home, and what a romantic reception it is! Situated on a typical, suburban corner lot, the Split Level House is set into a lush modern landscape of mature grasses, heathers, and mosses. ⁠The home is approached from the side of the property, along the sidewalk, ascending a meandering stairway of concrete pads nestled into a planted, street-side berm encapsulating the house. At the top of those steps, accompanied by twin rain chains under a large overhang, the natural material palette of the architecture unfolds in an inviting gesture of warmth and familiarity.
