The Smith House, by Sharp & Thompson, Berwick, Pratt, was on the leading edge of modern domestic architecture in the Pacific Northwest at the time of its construction in 1949. An early example of post-and-beam construction, the design utilized a simple form, an efficient and expressive structure, an interior open plan, and large windows overlooking what would have originally been a view of the Coastal Mountains. For 74 years, Smith House created home for family, showing us the possibilities of modern domestic living, and contributing, in part, to a movement that has shaped large swaths of Canada’s west coast. The home was demolished in 2023 to make way for land amalgamation and residential densification.
