Villa Maris, lovingly known as the Pink Palace, is

Villa Maris, lovingly known as the Pink Palace, is a modern icon of New Sensualism on the shores of West Vancouver. Built in 1965, the 101-unit apartment building, with its minimalism, bold use of colour, arches and curvature, takes inspiration from Miami Modernism and sets itself apart from the predominant expressions of modern architecture on the North Shore. Inside and out, the building is a trip back in time and a character unto itself, equally animated by a vibrant balcony culture born of its community of residents.

Our friends at @northshoreheritage recently took a deep dive into the building and its interiors. Check out West Vancouver's Villa Maris.

This is a wonderful new documentary film delving into the personal life of Canada's most consequential architect. You won't want to miss it!

From directors Ryan Mah and Danny Berish (Outside In), and producer Leah Mallen (Coast Modern), Beauty Between the Lines delves into the life and work of Arthur Erickson, a visionary architect first in Canada and ultimately throughout the world. With intimate interviews, unseen archival footage, and an exploration of his architectural masterpieces, the film weaves together the complexities of Vancouver-based architect's personal and professional life. It reveals a man who transcended traditional boundaries, who fused art, culture, and nature and in the process, redefined modern architecture.

Daniel Evan White is perhaps one of our region's g

Daniel Evan White is perhaps one of our region's greatest residential architects and one of our biggest secrets. Daniel was not one for self-promotion, and so his work, which is nothing less than stunning and intuitive, has largely stayed out of the limelight. Like so many others of significance, his work is largely unprotected, despite being deserving of it.

Daniel was a graduate of UBC architecture, and credited as the first full-time employee of Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey, contributing to their 1962 winning competition for Simon Fraser University. He spent much of his career designing single-family houses, with a body of work characterized by a strict adherence to geometric play, which he used as a way to divide up the functional spaces of a home and to engage the structure and form with the surrounding topography. He had an ability to create experimental homes that were monumental and yet some of the most intuitively livable spaces we've had the pleasure of visiting.

Not 1, but 2 of Daniel Evan White's homes are currently on the market, including his 1980 Máté House in West Vancouver, and 1994 Bjorknas House in North Vancouver. While the Bjorknas House appears to have adhered to its original design, the Máté House has undergone some transformation (the photos shown are of its original character). Both houses are significant to the modern architectural history of our region and so we are hopeful that new owners will see these homes as the works of art that they are.

Austrian-born and educated, Rudolph Schindler laid

Austrian-born and educated, Rudolph Schindler laid the foundation for what is now considered the California lifestyle of indoor-outdoor living. Directed by Valentina Ganeva, a new documentary explores his richly complex work, with its influences from the turn of the 20th century Vienna, the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright, the pueblos of Taos. It is an investigation into Schindler’s philosophy of Space Architecture as contrasted with the International Style that ruled modern architecture during most of the architect’s life.

Schindler Space Architect reexamines his complicated relationship with mentor Frank Lloyd Wright and his rival Richard Neutra. The story asks key questions about the importance of domestic architecture in creating a national culture and as a living entity that shapes humanity. Schindler Space Architect affirms the singular genius of one man and the eternal challenge every artist faces to stay true to their vision and leave a lasting impact.

Rudolph Schindler, like Richard Neutra and others, have had a tremendous influence on our West Coast Modern design ethos. The League is thrilled to be introducing the premiere of Schindler Space Architect to Vancouver audiences on November 9th, during the ADFF:Vancouver at the VIFF Centre.

🚨 Completed in 1962, the Charles G. Brown Memorial Pool was designed by Blair Macdonald, then of McCarter Nairne and Partners, in Burnaby. In late 2022, after 60 years in service, the building was closed, and earlier this year it was demolished to make way for a new aquatic centre and arena.

Last night saw the Vancouver launch of a new publication featuring contemporary adaptations of West Coast Modernism reflected through the modern residential projects of BC-based architects.

"Decades after gaining international recognition through the work of practitioners such as Barry Downs, Arthur Erickson, and Ron Thom, the West Coast Modern style remains widely celebrated and highly influential for residential architects in British Columbia and beyond, even as its expressions evolve and adapt to contemporary contexts. What are the contours of its legacy today—and has a new regional style emerged?

Clinton Cuddington invited dozens of B.C.-based architects to share residential projects that exemplify their design process. Their responses range from palatial mountain chalets to cabins sitting lightly in the forest to oceanfront retreats to sensitive urban renovations. Each house is presented through full-colour photos and accompanied by short essays by curator and critic Michael Prokopow that draw on visits to each house and interviews with the architects to elucidate the many aesthetic and programmatic accomplishments on display.

As Prokopow details in an incisive essay, each house is necessarily also a response to the conditions of its creation, notably its site—locations include the Sea-to-Sky Region, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, Southern Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the West Kootenays—as well as its social and cultural context, and so is revealing of modern ideas about home and family, leisure and vocation, ecological concerns and communion with nature on Canada’s West Coast.

With thoughtful, deeply informed prose and over 300 captivating photos, Reside is an absorbing and inspiring tour of some of the most exceptional houses in the country, and a portrait of how the unique character of the region is expressed in built form." – Figure 1 Publishing

Join us during the first annual Design Vancouver Festival, a citywide festival hosted by Vancouver’s thriving design community. You may remember this event from years ago when it was known as Vancouver Design Week. In the late 1960s, architect Roger Kemble ventured

In the late 1960s, architect Roger Kemble ventured away from the regional modernist influences of his early career, designing a series of “coloured box” houses in Vancouver and on the North Shore, projects that would garner attention both locally and with national audiences. Exploring the use of plywood as both a sheathing membrane and structural stressed skin, coated in a neoprene hypalon sealer, and finished in a vibrant palette of blues, reds, and yellows, among others, these homes were radically different from the predominant ideas of modern west coast design.
