You may remember, not long ago, this home being on

You may remember, not long ago, this home being on the market and featured in a CBC article as part of broader conversation about the loss of our modern architectural and cultural heritage. That was back in 2018 and is a sentiment that has seen some progress but not yet enough. Hwang House was one of the two houses featured in that article, which is now again on the market.

Designed by renowned Canadian architect Arthur Erickson, Hwang House was a tribute to the ancestry of the Hwang family and the traditional Soo Chow houses of Northern China. Erickson drew inspiration from the paired courtyard structures of Soo Chow, incorporating a sequence of distinct courtyards, tall stucco walls, and symbolic planted mounds to echo the region’s hillscape. The residence blended cultural tradition with modern design through features like a large reflecting pool, exposed structural elements, and continuous skylights. The result was a harmonious integration of landscape, architecture, and heritage—hallmarks of Erickson’s culturally-sensitive, place-based, and contextual approach to design.

It is a work of art that we hope will find a new owner that values its architectural and cultural significance and stewards it into the future.

Dodek House, built in 1957-58, was designed for Morton and Irene Dodek. During a futile search for a new home, the young couple, on the recommendation of an electrician they knew, enlisted the inventive Ron Thom to create a home tailored to their needs. Thom, whose work was heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, gave them an education on design and building, and delivered to them an L-shaped home in plan, anchored by a gargantuan brick fireplace, which would later become a U-shaped home around a lush courtyard following an addition in 1967. The design, praised for its “delicate restraint, consistency of detail, and its excellent plan,” received the Architectural Institute of British Columbia Award of Honour in 1960. Recognized for its seamless indoor-outdoor integration, Japanese-influenced detailing, and emphasis on suburban privacy, it was designated a heritage building in 2005 for its cultural significance.

Since 1958, the Dodek Residence has been a much loved family home and, for the first time in its history, is in search of a new family to love and steward it into the future. It is a beautiful and unique home and we are optimistic that a new owner sensitive to the architecture will be found.

Design Victoria returns May 1–4 to celebrate Victoria and the island’s growing design community. This festival brings together different parts of the creative community and shows the value of good design. Events will be happening across the city and beyond, organized by Design Victoria’s partners. These include special installations, exhibitions, events, open houses, tours and workshops – and the official Launch Party.

The League is a proud community partner of Design Victoria. On May 3rd, we will be joined by architects Julian Carnite of Woven Architecture & Design and Bruce Greenway of Greenway Studio Architecture to hear about their projects On the Boards.

Meet Bruce Greenway, one of the upcoming speakers

Meet Bruce Greenway, one of the upcoming speakers at the League’s On the Boards talk for the Design Victorial Festival.

Bruce Greenway founded Greenway Studio Architecture to create nature-inspired buildings and spaces that seek to merge with the landscape they inhabit, approach environmental sustainability, and connect with what is meaningful to the people that live and work in them. The studio specializes in unique single family homes, yoga/wellness retreats, and community meeting places. It’s award winning work has been featured in local and international journals.

Bruce was introduced to architecture at 14 by a book with pictures of buildings by Antonio Gaudí and the ‘Organic’ Architecture of Bruce Goff and Frank Lloyd Wright. This early inspiration set his course in life and became the roots for his current work.

Pacific West Coast of BC has been home for 20 years. He loves to draw and paint the experiences of extended travel in Africa, Asia, South America, and coach his kid’s sports teams. He worked as a carpenter’s apprentice while in university and, with his wife, built the house in Victoria that they live in.

🚨 DEMOLITION ALERT | Commissioned by Phil and Mairi Narod in the early 1960s, Narod House II was designed by legendary West Coast Modernist Ron Thom, while at Thompson, Berwick & Pratt, and completed in 1964. The home is a single-storey, split-level set atop an oceanside cliff, symbiotically nestled into its mature landscape of towering trees, while looking out upon an expansive, west-oriented ocean view. The commission came at a time when Ron had already cemented his reputation for unique modern houses in the West Coast Modern idiom. The design of Narod, however, falls into a vein of work undertaken in the early 1960s, on the heels of the Forrest-Baker and Merler houses, upon which we can draw the closest similarities.

Narod House II has been listed on the market for some time, however, a subdivision of the property seems to have taken place with the new property line bisecting the Ron Thom-designed house. The sale is described as an opportunity to acquire one or both properties.

While deep pockets are required, these properties are unique. We are hopeful that a buyer comes forward who will see the value in this property as the modern architectural gem that it is, and work to save this creation of Ron Thom.
