With a deep sense of loss, we join the community i With a deep sense of loss, we join the community in mourning the passing of our friend and colleague, renowned landscape architect Don Vaughan. In landscape architecture, as in life, Don approached the world with curiosity, vitality, good humour, and, importantly, the resolve to lift others up. He fulfilled this aim through design, education, mentorship, and friendship in equal parts. Underpinning his formative contributions to our built environment, and the discipline of landscape architecture, was a steadfast belief in the democratization of the public realm and the common good. This philosophy, felt in the seminal works of Expo 86, the post-Expo development of False Creek, Whistler Town Centre, Ambleside, and the myriad of plazas and parklets dotting Vancouver’s West End and surrounding municipalities, have become a part of the daily routine for thousands living, working, and playing across the region. Our urban environment and daily way of life is better off for his vision and care in crafting public space for the support and enjoyment of all. The West Coast Modern League offers our heartfelt condolences to Don’s family, friends, and to those who mourn in recognition of his unique and extraordinary legacy. We are so grateful for our community of designers, artists, makers, and cultural enthusiasts who came out on Monday night to learn about and celebrate the new design and ceramic works of Andrea & Mike. It was an evening inspired by intense creativity, underscored by an embrace of imperfection and, as Mike dubbed, a "down to clown" willingness to question established processes. Launched in 2023, with events in Vancouver and Victoria each year since, On the Boards has featured local practitioners primarily across the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design. This latest event marked the League's focused effort to expand the series into the allied arts. Meet Mike Seymour, who will share his work with us Meet Mike Seymour, who will share his work with us during our upcoming On the Boards event on January 26th. Mike Seymour’s artwork situates itself within the disciplines of craft, design, and sculpture. His process involves an experimental approach to combining and using craft and industrial processes and hands-on collaboration with craftspeople and technicians. Deliberately suspending his focus between crafts such as metalworking, enamelling, glass working and ceramics, combining the processes and materials almost haphazardly, his interest lies in bypassing a kind of technical ability to allow the material and techniques to influence the works. In 2024, Mike Seymour launched ‘Sfossils’ as a way of reframing works that bridge sculptural and functional prerogatives. The debut installation ‘Paean’ was a large columnal ceramic chandelier hung in the grand staircase of the Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, a 16th century disused villa in Milan, Italy. Mike Seymour has been exploring surfaces for his most recent projects, mainly by examining the interconnectedness of materials used in crafts like ceramics, enamelling and glassblowing. Using first-hand relationships between these ways of working, observations on industry, and the communities that form around them as sources of inspiration – these projects become social, philosophical and most recently, political. Meet Andrea Copp, one of the speakers who will sha Meet Andrea Copp, one of the speakers who will share her work with us during our upcoming On the Boards event on January 26th. Andrea is a Vancouver-based ceramic artist working primarily in a variety of stoneware and porcelain clays, with ties to both Canada and the UK. Her practice spans sculptural and functional forms, including one-of-a-kind collectible works, paper-thin porcelain sculptures, a sculptural table, wall-based tile pieces, and intuitive rock sculptures. Layered with poetry, story, and emotional landscape, Copp’s work explores inner and outer worlds through material, intuition, and balance, shaped by lived experience and place. Her approach is honest and collaborative. She was recently named Western Living Designer of the Year in the Makers category and a Western Living Design 25 finalist, and regularly leads workshops and creative collaborations.
