📢 On January 26th, join the West Coast Modern League, with Addition Agency, for the next in our On the Boards speaker series. We welcome Vancouver-based ceramic artist Andrea Copp (Andrea Copp Ceramics) and artist/designer Mike Seymour (SFossils), each sharing their latest works and research within practices that both articulate intuitive, material-led experimentation with sculptural and functional prerogatives, shaped by life experience, place, community, and technique.

Andrea Copp works primarily in a variety of stoneware and porcelain clays, with ties to both Canada and the UK. Her practice spans sculptural and functional forms, including one-of-a-kind collectible works, paper-thin porcelain sculptures, a sculptural table, wall-based tile pieces, and intuitive rock sculptures. Layered with poetry, story, and emotional landscape, Copp’s work explores inner and outer worlds through material, intuition, and balance, shaped by lived experience and place.

Mike Seymour’s artwork situates itself within the disciplines of craft, design, and sculpture. His process involves an experimental approach to combining and using craft and industrial processes and hands-on collaboration with craftspeople and technicians. Deliberately suspending his focus between crafts such as metalworking, enamelling, glass working and ceramics, combining processes and materials almost haphazardly, his interest lies in bypassing a kind of technical ability to allow the material and techniques to influence the works.

The longevity of Bob Lewis' modern homes, the vast majority of which are still standing today, including some with their original owners, speaks to the liveability of their spaces and the efficiency and adaptability of the structures for families of a variety of sizes. Renovated and adapted, Cleestad House is among those still standing 65 years after it was first built.

Wishing for fresh pow.

Taken on a snowy day in 2019, these 1977 townhouses by Geoffrey Massey reflect one of the iconic modern architectural forms of 1970s Whistler. The resulting interiors are a chef's kiss of the cosy and playful spaces that you want to hang out in after a long day on the slopes.

Look up, way up! It's the 1980 O'Sullivan/Donaldso

Look up, way up! It's the 1980 O'Sullivan/Donaldson House by the late Canadian architect's architect Peter Cardew. Built on the side of a steep and runoff-prone site, the home is elevated on steel columns to allow the natural landscape to remain mostly untouched, and for anything coming down the hill to move through. A bridge from the high side of the property provides access, slicing through the home's interior and ending at a fully glazed western wall with expansive ocean views. Commissioned by two working professionals who wanted extra room for work and guests, the design pushed beyond a conventional layout by incorporating two dens and guest accommodation.

While much of what Bob Lewis built can be found on the North Shore, there are pockets of his homes scattered across the Lower Mainland. Built in 1960, Gibson House sits in a quiet neighbourhood south of the Fraser River and takes on a more sprawling, single-storey plan combining a gentle gable with his usual flat roof form. A somewhat unique house within his overall body of work while including quintessentially Lewis details.

Gibson House has been added to the League's online Modern Places catalogue.
