Build a future, not a fortune: Housing and capitalism

Jeremy McLeod is the co-founder and design director of Breathe Architecture. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Breathe is known for their projects that balance ethics with aesthetics, driven by a commitment to their studio’s purpose to “use design as a weapon for good, and a tool to build a better future.” Founded by McLeod and Tamara Veltre in 2001, Breathe is Australia’s most awarded sustainable architecture and design firm. 

McLeod is also one of the instigators of Nightingale Housing, a not-for-profit organisation building housing that radically challenges typical development methods. Born in response to Melbourne’s housing crisis and inspired by the city’s history of architectural activism, Nightingale grew out of a series of architect-funded prototypes that aimed to design for people, not profit, with a triple bottom line of social, financial, and environmental sustainability. The organisation has now delivered over 400 homes, with another 250 under construction.
