The Forster House (c. 1950), designed by Fred Hollingsworth, has been demolished under a cloud of controversy. ⁠
⁠
"Under a heritage revitalization agreement with the municipality, portions of the Hollingworth-designed Forster Residence were supposed to be retained. Instead, the entire home was levelled."[1]⁠

To today's standards, mid century kitchens are not

To today's standards, mid century kitchens are notorious for having been undersized. Of course, this generalization does not apply to all of them, but enough to be notorious. When renovating a midcentury home, the kitchen is usually the first under the microscope.

The Reynolds II House, on the other hand, bucks that trend with a surprisingly generous and comfortable space. Open and directly adjacent to the main living areas, Daniel Evan White created what was thought to be an unorthodox space, not to the client's brief to provide a "farm kitchen," and yet the family came to realize that it functioned in exactly the way they had hoped. "The kitchen, as in farm houses, was to be the focal point of the interior, the place where everybody tended to gravitate to." [1]

From the moment you step past the entry threshold, you are immersed in a series of very deliberate moves designed to engage you directly with the ocean and the surrounding treetops. The oversized post-and-beam structure not only gives form to the house, but acts as a series of apertures pulling focus down the face of the cliff towards the surface of the water, and up towards the sky through the dense forest canopy. The home is as much about living in and being surrounded by exceptional architecture, as it is about engaging with the intricacies and nuances of the natural environment all around you. ⁠

Featured in the Museum of Vancouver's 2013 retrospective exhibition, entitled "Play House: The Architecture of Daniel Evan White," the Reynolds II House (c. 1975) is regarded as "one of the best of his earlier houses." ⁠

"The exterior design is simple, an elaboration of basic post and beam construction. It is bold articulation of that basic style, with the beams heavily 'expressed,' as architects say. That is, the house, like all Daniel White creations, never presents a broad, single-surface front wall; that front exterior is broken up into various forms, like horizontal beams, which can be clearly seen as both distinct and part of a whole."[1]⁠

Canada's west coast has a formidable history of modern design, with a particularly exceptional body of work in domestic architecture. The League is fortunate to have the opportunity to tour a lot of these architecturally significant works and to meet the residents who care so deeply for these gems. The number of awe-inspiring houses, the kind that stop you in your tracks, is remarkable. This is one of them!⁠

Completed in 1975 for Jack Reynolds and family, this is the Reynolds II House, designed by eminent architect Daniel Evan White. ⁠
⁠
Nestled at the top of a heavily-treed cliff on the very edge of the ocean, it is bold, dramatic, meticulously detailed, and full of fun surprises. Best of all, it offers a sense of architectural grandeur while being an exceptionally comfortable space to inhabit.⁠
