We offer our sincere congratulations to the incomparable Nick Milkovich who this month was awarded the 2020 AIBC Lifetime Achievement Award.

With more than 50 years of professional practice, Nick Milkovich has led an illustrious, award-winning career practicing architecture in British Columbia and around the world. Nick began his career joining the practice of Erickson/Massey Architects in 1968, continuing with Arthur Erickson Architects from 1972 where he became an associate and later the director of design, then establishing Nick Milkovich Architects in 1991. He has led and/or been a part of the design team for many of our region’s most prominent buildings including the Museum of Anthropology, Eppich II House and Studio, The Waterfall Building, Tacoma Museum of Glass, and more recently šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square and the nearly reopened revitalization of Robson Square, among many others.

In 2017, Nick was kind enough to join us for one of our League meetings. Coincidentally, this meeting took place on the 49th anniversary of his start at Erickson/Massey Architects, a practice he joined the day after graduating from the University of British Columbia.

The form of Crown Life Place takes inspiration fro

The form of Crown Life Place takes inspiration from its unique position at the convergence of West Pender with Cardero and West Georgia Streets, and at the base of the hill that rises up towards the center of Downtown Vancouver. In what has been described as sculptural brutalism, the structural core of the building is setback and exposed against the southern facade, acting as an obstruction to solar heat gain, while the remaining elevations provide the open floor spaces with expansive glazing and exquisite views towards the city, harbour, and coastal mountains.

Upon arriving in Vancouver in 1966, Peter Cardew j

Upon arriving in Vancouver in 1966, Peter Cardew joined the office of Rhone & Iredale Architects where, in 1978, he would complete Crown Life Place, known now as 1500 West Georgia. This 20-storey office tower, what has since become a landmark on the Vancouver skyline, is diagonally canted away from the street composing a grand entrance to the city’s westward expansion of the central business district. Flanked by a large trapezoidal reflecting pool, which spills over towards the sidewalk below, the architecture and its surrounding landscape create a serene atmosphere alongside one of Vancouver’s busiest thoroughfares.

From the back of each studio, steel staircases lead up to private rooftop gardens atop each of the dwellings. Balancing a sense of privacy and community, this exterior access both animates the space and opens the inhabitants up to uninhibited views across the False Creek Flats towards Downtown Vancouver and the Coastal Mountains in the distance.

Constructed in 1996, Odlum Live Work Studios is Peter Cardew’s reinterpretation of European courtyard housing in East Vancouver. Situated within a neighbourhood vernacular of light industrial warehouse buildings and single-family homes, sits a series of inconspicuous concrete block, steel, glass, and wood frame structures. Consisting of four units, each comprising an individual living space and working studio, the dwellings encompass a central courtyard that at once enhances the availability of natural light and fosters a sense of community in an otherwise predominantly industrial surrounding.
