Whether hanging out with the family, or inviting friends up for the week, Hope House has you covered. In much the same way as Henrik Bull’s “Convertible Second” divided the wings into common living and sleeping quarters, Hope House splits these areas over two floors on one side, with an additional suite on the other. And for those extra visitors, I’m sure you can still throw down some sleeping bags in the living room or out on the open-air breezeway!

Near the edge of the Cascade Mountain range sits this "leisure-time home," a contemporary family house inspired by the Henrik Bull DFPA Design No. 12 "Convertible Second” that originally occupied the site. ⁠

Borrowing on the original simplicity of form and materials, family centricity, indoor/outdoor living, and spatial arrangement, the home is divided into two segments separated by the signature breezeway. This is Hope House, designed by MA+HG Architects, completed in 2021. ⁠

Henrik Bull's "Convertible Second" is divided into two programmatically opposite wings, one for active living and one for sleeping. The two segments are separated by a breezeway covered with a retractable canvas roof. Perfect for a family getaway to the great outdoors! ⁠

Having some friends up for the week? No problem! Throw down some sleeping bags in the living room or in the breezeway on those clear, starry nights, and you're set. Those who want a little extra sleep can retreat to the bedroom wing, while the rest stay up to sit around the fireplace sharing ghost stories.⁠

If you're fortunate enough to have recreational property in this neck of the woods, now is that time of year when you gather the family and head to the cabin. In the 1950s, as highway networks were opening greater swaths of America, and more and more families were looking for that rustic getaway, inexpensive plywood "leisure-time homes" became all the rage. ⁠
⁠
Western plywood producers, through the agency of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association (DFPA), championed a series of these "leisure-time homes," simple designs and materials that could be cost-effectively purchased and built for your favourite family vacation spot. ⁠
__⁠
DESIGN NO. 12, also referred to as the "Convertible Second," was one such design by renowned San Francisco architect Henrik Bull. ⁠
⁠
This home was promoted as having "most of the comforts of your city home in a 960 sq.ft. economy cabin. Designed for two-stage development, it can be built for around $3,200 in the first unpainted rustically furnished stage. This includes wiring, plumbing and carpenter's labor but does not include the lot or septic tank installation. Architect Bull achieves the construction economies and livability of conventional box-like structures but eliminates the boxy appearance with two rectangular units — one for living and one for sleeping – connected by a 16 x 20 foot sun deck sheltered with a "convertible" canvas covered gable." [1] ⁠

While noting that "no plans can be mailed outside the U.S.A.," some of these homes migrated across the border into Western Canada. ⁠

The initiative to build IH came from UBC students. When the International Students Club, housed in an army hut since 1951, petitioned to build a more permanent structure, the university president was enthusiastic and generous financial assistance came from the Vancouver Rotary Club. The initial idea was to create a residential building along the lines of earlier International Houses in New York, Berkeley, and Chicago, though a planned dormitory did not materialize. IH was an important part of UBC’s post-war expansion, which saw several new modernist buildings rising on campus.

🚨 DEMOLITION ALERT: Early in 2022, UBC Campus and Community Planning confirmed it’s intention to demolish International House.
