Home Lumber was designed as an minimal and refined composition of forms and materials. Open to the sky through a pyramidal skylight, with frameless glass opening to views of the surrounding low-lying shrubbery, the enclosure is visually reduced to an elegant post-and-beam structure shielded by an expansive, cantilevered roof, and sited upon an elevated terrazzo podium. A spatial and material experience akin to being seated beneath a tree canopy.⁠

Quiet and comfortable has since become a bold stat

Quiet and comfortable has since become a bold statement amongst its industrial park neighbours. A light-filled, human-scaled structure, constructed of glass and heavy timber, the building is a succinct commercial translation of the free-standing pavilion concepts explored in his residential body of work. This is Home Lumber (Jawl Industries Offices), designed by Arthur Erickson and completed in 1972. ⁠

A new exhibition on emerging architectural practit

A new exhibition on emerging architectural practitioners opens tonight at the Burrard Arts Foundation. See you there!

Posted @withregram • @burrardarts Our new show, "Emerging From Architecture," is open today, with a public reception from 6-9PM (proof of vaccination is required to attend the reception) In collaboration with the @architecturefoundationbc , the exhibition presents the work of recently announced 2021 Emerging Firm Award recipient, @starkarchitecture, as well as past Emerging Firm Award winners: @measuredarchitecture, @darcyjonesarchitects, @mahgarchitects, and @leckiestudio.

@erictkaczyk's video installation for The BAF Garage, titled /ˈsent(ə)nəl/, is also viewable as of today. A separate reception for #EricTkaczyk's work will be held on Thursday, December 2 from 6-9PM.

Modern child's play has been at the center of design thinking for nearly a century, particularly within the optimistic spirit of the modernist movement. From prescriptive play structures to adventure playgrounds, designers have explored the multitude of ways to promote a sense of wonder, imagination, fantasy, physical activity, and to aid in social and educational development. ⁠

The 2017 Brick House, designed by Campos Studio, is an architecture of play, a veritable, "non-committal" playground that invites the imagination of the child to discover how it is used. "The spaces, along with the material choices, were designed to allow the children to transform formal living spaces into game areas. Blurring the distinction between formal and play areas throughout the house encourages us to rethink the way we segregate functions and encourage creative thinking about space." –Campos Studio ⁠
