On October 22, 2021, join @ubcsala and @margoleseprize for the official 2021 Margolese Prize, a presentation of Nina-Marie Lister's work, and a panel discussion with distinguished design professionals and academics: Jill Anholt, Julia Czerniak, Kees Lokman and Mary Rowe. ⁠
⁠
Established through an estate gift to UBC by the late Leonard Herbert Margolese, the annual prize recognizes an inspirational Canadian citizen who engages in design aimed at improving the built environment. Relaunched in 2021 after a three-year hiatus, the prize was reprogrammed by the school to emphasize that in addition to aesthetics, design needs to enhance social, cultural, and ecological well-being.⁠

📢 IN THE NEWS: Congratulations to Nina-Marie Lister, recipient of the 2021 Margolese National Design for Living Prize, announced late last month by the University of British Columbia School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. ⁠
⁠
"Nina-Marie Lister is Professor and Graduate Director at the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University (renaming in process), where she founded the Ecological Design Lab, Canada’s first hands-on community-based research incubator focused on applied urban ecology and design. Through the lab, funded by national research and foundation grants, Lister engages, trains, and supports students working directly with professionals and communities to advance research and develop tangible solutions to complex, transdisciplinary problems such as climate resilience, urban biodiversity, and human wellbeing.⁠

She is also the founding principal of PLANDFORM, which engages a wide range of practitioners including ecologists, artists, landscape architects, engineers, and planners in collaborative projects aimed at transforming the way communities think about and interact with natural and built environments."[1]⁠

📢 IN THE NEWS: Congratulations to Julie Bargmann, inaugural recipient of the $100,000 Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize, announced this morning by The Cultural Landscape Foundation. ⁠

"Bargmann, a native of Westwood, NJ, is a Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, and the founder of D.I.R.T. (“Dump It Right There”) studio. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master in Landscape Architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (1987). In 1989-90 she was a Fellow in Landscape Architecture at the American Academy in Rome. ⁠

The biennial Oberlander Prize, which includes a $100,000 award, two years of public engagement activities focused on the laureate’s work and landscape architecture more broadly and is named for the late landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, is bestowed on a recipient who is “exceptionally talented, creative, courageous, and visionary” and has “a significant body of built work that exemplifies the art of landscape architecture.”[1]⁠

Taken earlier in the summer, the 1966 Woyat-Bowie Building looked to be undergoing an extensive rehabilitation (update to follow). In documents included in the development package, a conservation approach outlines the intention to "preserve the Woyat-Bowie Building in its entirety, to restore all Character-Defining Elements as identified in the Statement of Significance and provide ongoing maintenance and repair to ensure the building's preservation."[1] ⁠

The design of the 1966 Woyat-Bowie Building, desig

The design of the 1966 Woyat-Bowie Building, designed by Fred Hollingsworth and Barry Downs, drew inspiration from the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, along with principles of organic planning, Japanese architecture, and the integration of the interior with its surroundings. Viewed from the street, the building presents as two, solid, stucco-clad wings painted in white, joined in the center by a cedar-clad monitor roof hovering over a full-height glass entryway. Bounded on two sides by public roads, the design turns the inhabitant’s attention away from the street, as does much of West Coast Modernist architecture, instead pulling the focus of each of the offices towards a series of interior courtyards. The building projects a quiet presence with clean, beautifully detailed, simple forms.⁠

🚨 ALERT: On October 19, 2021 @ 6:00pm PT, the District of West Vancouver will hold a Public Hearing on a proposal to rezone a number of properties adjacent to the Woyat-Bowie Building, along with designation of the Woyat-Bowie as a heritage resource. This proposal would allow construction of an 8-storey, 89-unit residential building, while ensuring the ongoing protection and maintenance of the heritage structure for commercial and office purposes. ⁠

Constructed in 1966, the Woyat-Bowie Building is a low-slung, one-storey commercial structure designed by architects Fred Hollingsworth and Barry Downs. The building, an early example of West Coast Modernism in a commercial structure, was originally commissioned and designed to house medical/dental practices, for Drs. Woyat & Bowie, and studios for the architects. ⁠
