By design, C–SHORE is attuned to its material an

By design, C–SHORE is attuned to its material and natural ecologies. Not only was the cedar harvested and milled from a nearby building site, but the design used the inherent characteristics of that material to create a serene and contemplative space connected to its place. The construction, which utilized an adjustable clamping system and passive ventilation, fosters the cedar's natural drying process and allows for efficient disassembly later on. Once deconstructed, the lumber is planned to be reused to build planter boxes at nearby primary schools to support ecological education. ⁠

Borrowing on ideas explored in Peter Zumthor’s Sound Pavilion at Expo 2000, C-SHORE was constructed of stacked western red cedar felled and milled from a nearby residential site. Beyond it’s wonderful olfactory experience, the variegated bands of stacked wood create a dynamic multi-sensory encounter, whereby the inhabitant’s interaction varies with the their line of sight and position in space. ⁠

Imagine you are walking across a bustling university campus on a warm, beautiful sunny day. As you pass through one of the busiest nodes on campus, you come upon what looks like a wood pile, but one that is inviting you to approach it. Crossing a diagonal wood ramp and through an opening in the stack, you are welcomed by the fragrance of western red cedar while the sounds of tall grasses in a light breeze replace the noise of the surrounding campus. This place exists and it is called C-SHORE, a wood pavilion and place of respite designed and constructed by graduate students at UBC SALA. ⁠

Conceived as a repeatable experimental model for mass-produced housing, Melnikov House is composed of two large interlocking cylinders of equal diameter. The street-facing facade is marked by a large vertical expanse of glass, while the rear facade is perforated with no less than 64 hexagonal windows, allowing sunlight to enter the space no matter the direction of the sun.
