There’s something in the works at Bentall Four.

There’s something in the works at Bentall Four. Hapa Collaborative and Tangible Interaction are collaborating on the reactivation of the sunken public plaza off of Dunsmuir. Commonly known as the “Bear Pit,” the plaza was originally designed by Landscape Architect Don Vaughan, and completed in 1981, featuring a large cascading waterfall from street level down to a pool on the plaza level. The waterfall has now been decommissioned and a new inhabitable, cascading cedar deck will take its place. Over the open plaza a new illuminated canopy to enliven the space at night.

In the late 1950's to early 1960's, Ron Thom was busy designing more than 30 modern residences on the west coast of Canada, this in addition to the work he was doing at the practice of Thompson, Berwick & Pratt Architects. Among those works was the 1956 Anderson House, a home Ron Thom designed for Mr. and Mrs. Clay Anderson. ⁠

The Anderson House was designed with strong horizontal lines, emphasized by flat roof planes, expansive eaves, large continuous ribbon windows, horizontal trim boards, and wood screen projections at the upper window heads. You might note the influence of the great American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, whose residential works served as a strong influence to many North American architects of the mid century modernist era. ⁠

Built on the side of a steep slope, set into a lush modern west coast landscape, this is the Hayashi House, completed in 1962, designed by architect Arnulf H Petzold. ⁠

Exhibiting all of the defining characteristics of a west coast modernist house, the Hayashi House was designed with exposed post and beam structure, wide overhanging eaves, large ribbon windows, and natural materials throughout. At the western end of the house, Arnulf incorporated a large second storey deck, slightly askew from the rest of the structure, which you can imagine would make for some stunning sunsets and great outdoor parties. ⁠

On the oceanside, the Cliff House steps down the towering, windswept rock face, working its way into the dips and crevices between three granite bluffs. What started as a private, enveloping gesture, on the rear of the house, becomes one of openness and unimpeded transparency overlooking dramatic views of the Strait of Georgia and the crashing waves below.

Entered from above, the plan of the Cliff House shifts from one level to the next as you move closer to the water. Zoltan Kiss designed the house to achieve a perfect fit with the undulated topography as it falls away below the house. This allowed for opportunities to pull the the building away from the cliff face to create dramatic wall planes and intimate sunken courtyards on the lower levels. In a home that prioritizes natural light in the darkest of its corners, ribbon skylights run the full length of the upper floor, while these light wells enable natural light to reach the lower levels in a dappled pattern filtered through the lush forest canopy. ⁠

West Coast Modernism has its roots in an intimate,

West Coast Modernism has its roots in an intimate, collaborative association with the arts community on Canada's west coast, and a philosophy of looking to artistic interpretations to enrich the architectural design process. Being immersed in both nature and culture is one of the cornerstones of West Coast Modern living.

The 1981 Cliff House, designed by Zoltan Kiss, follows this philosophy as both a space of family dwelling in nature, and enjoying and producing art. While dramatic in its form and siting, the architecture itself is rather subdued, instead providing a framework that emphasizes sweeping views of the Strait of Georgia under copious amounts of natural light, and the vibrancy of art works which once filled its spaces. At one time, the home was entered through a wood plank door carved by renowned artist Bill Reid.
