In addition to an assortment of other wood products, the Radium Hot Springs Centre utilizes dowel-laminated timber (DLT) roof panels, a 100% recyclable, all wood structural panel system constructed of friction fit timber members, without any glue or metal fasteners. It is considered one of the first in Canada to be built this way. The overall use of wood throughout the building is a homage to one of the primary industries of the region.

It's not an uncommon experience to run into Bighor

It's not an uncommon experience to run into Bighorn Sheep roaming about the Village of Radium Hot Springs, even standing on their hind legs picking food out of the trees, which is exactly why the design of the Radium Community Centre & Library called for Bighorn Sheep-friendly planting. But this wasn't the only sensitive intervention. ⁠

There is a natural maturity and rugged sensibility about the site and the design of its spaces, the result of a conscious effort to leave as much of the environment as undisturbed as possible. The building, for example, was sited to preserve an existing stand of pine trees and their natural solar shading, and the overall development was limited to the footprint of the previous. Clad in natural building materials, surrounded by large rocks and drought-resistant shrubbery, the design reflects the character of its place, a hot, rugged landscape where the Columbia River wetlands meet the Rock Mountains. ⁠

Known as the "100 Mile" building, the Radium Hot Springs Centre is a model for community building, designed to harness local materials and trades within 100 miles of the building site. Designed by Urban Arts Architecture, the building was completed for the Village of Radium Hot Springs and the broader Columbia Valley region in 2018. ⁠

"Wood was selected as the primary building material to partner with local industry to support the Columbia Valley economy as well as demonstrate the use of renewable resources and innovative replicable building systems. The goal was to create warm, healthy, and beautiful indoor and outdoors spaces, and economically construct a valued Community Hall and Library." – Urban Arts⁠

The Craighead House was constructed at a time when domestic modernism was being delivered to the masses on the west coast of Canada, with designers and builders exploring the use of economical materials and building methods – a kind of middle class modernism. The recorded cost of construction, in 1949, for this classic exoskeleton, post-and-beam home was (are you seated?) $7,200. Corrected for inflation to this year, it's still astonishing. ⁠

Completed in 1949, the Craighead House follows similar form and massing to many of the Sharp & Thompson, Berwick, Pratt houses of the era with a portion of the structural members expressed honestly on the exterior of the home. The house was originally designed for Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Craighead.⁠

Whether cruising along Marine Drive by car or on bike, you can't miss the most eye-popping structure of the Cypress Park Shopping Centre, the Automotive Repair Shop. Designed by Scott and Furnadjieff Architects, the shop carries a similar expression to the adjacent retail building, but with some obvious flourishes. It is unclear whether these vibrant colours were a part of the original construction, in 1961, nevertheless, the building carries the presence of an era past.⁠

In speaking with the owner of the Cypress Park Shopping Centre, there is a clear appreciation for design and for the historical significance of this midcentury modernist delight. ⁠
