📰 IN THE NEWS | Vancouver hair salon Suki's celebrates 50 years. Last week, CBC News featured a story on Suki Takagi, founder of Suki's Hair Salon, who moved to Vancouver in 1972 with her husband, and purchased her first hair salon in the South Granville neighbourhood. ⁠

In 1986, that South Granville location became a voluminous three-storey space, designed by none other than Arthur Erickson with Nick Milkovich, including a hair salon, spa, and beauty college. The building remains a part of the urban fabric to this day. ⁠

"Like all other art forms, architecture is both the mirror of a society and a subtle filter of its thinking, customs and socio-cultural values. Since architecture is so ubiquitous, its conditioning power runs deep and affects our well-being as well as our behaviour. If it is harsh, closed-in and dark, it will make us more predisposed to depression and aggressiveness, to physical and metal degeneration. If, on the other hand, it is open, bright, vibrant and peaceful, it will make us more joyful and serene. But to ensure psychological well-being, matter must be transcended. Église du Précieux-Sang is a voluminous space constructed of warm, earthy materials – variegated brick, glulam beams with cedar decking, and wood seating. The roof structure, evoking the metaphysical and the sacred, is an intricate double-spiralled array of wooden beams that focus the congregation's eyes toward an oculus brimming with natural light. It is said to be a cultural reference to the tipi, inspired by the primarily Métis parish. Renowned West Coast Modernist, Ron Thom, once described the building as "an outstanding example of Canadian regionalism."[1]

Imagine, as a young architecture student living in a new city, driving up on this peculiar, mind-bending structure, and then spending the next few hours walking it’s spaces, studying it’s organic forms, and trying to figure out how it all works. A remarkable first-hand education in what’s possible in design.

What is likely to be his most recognizable building, Église du Précieux-Sang, otherwise known as Precious Blood Church, was an early project in Étienne Gaboury’s illustrious career. The final result, nothing less than a spiritual, metaphysical experience.

His buildings are nothing short of iconic, wholly unique works of art, and he is regarded as perhaps one of Manitoba’s greatest architects. Étienne Gaboury, known as the “Father of Landmarks,” passed away in Winnipeg on October 14th at the age of 92. In a career spanning six decades, and a body of work encompassing over 300 built projects, in Canada and internationally, Étienne’s design philosophy was deeply rooted in a fascination and emotional attachment to the natural environment, “in all its beauty, complexity, mystery, majesty,” along with an interest in the emotional and spiritual elements of place, and a belief in the regional and cultural reflection of a building. He leaves an incredibly rich legacy of poetic, deeply experiential, awe-inspiring, organic design that we will take as inspiration for generations to come. The West Coast Modern League offers our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and we join many in the prairies, across Canada, and indeed around the world, in celebrating his profound impact on our built environment.⁠
