Intended to provide shelter from the rain and to i

Intended to provide shelter from the rain and to illuminate the dark shadow of a neighbouring tower, the bus shelter frames one edge of Vancouver's most prominent public plaza. Set along the ceremonial Georgia Street, and anchored to the Vancouver Art Gallery (by Sir Francis Mawson Rattenbury) and Robson Square (by Arthur Erickson and Cornelia Hahn Oberlander), this public square carries a long history of public celebration, ceremony, and protest. ⁠

Formerly known as the Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza, the public space was renamed to šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square, following its rehabilitation, in cooperation with the Coast Salish peoples – xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) – on whose traditional, ancestral, unceded territories the plaza resides.⁠

🚨ALERT: The most recognizable feature of the Weyerhaeuser campus is the low-slung office building, lovingly referred to as a “groundscraper” or skyscraper tilted on its side. You’ll notice a similarity in concept to that explored by Arthur Erickson and Cornelia Hahn Oberlander for the Provincial Law Courts in Downtown Vancouver. Spanning between two gentle slopes, the offices consist of a series of terraced concrete slabs, lushly planted with ivy and separated by full-height expanses of glazing. The building is flanked by a small lake to the north, and an idyllic meadow of colourful wildflowers and native grasses to the south, a favourite of nature photographers and the general public in the early spring.
